◆　FAQs of Otsu-e
     
What kinds of paintings were portrayed?
   

Otus-e was sold to travelers on the fifty-three stages of the Tokaido at inns and in front of houses as a souvenir painted by hand on the spot.

At the beginning, it started as Buddhist paintings on the subject of gods and Buddha. With the passing of time, various types of subjects have been portrayed.


During the Genroku period (1688-1704), subjects such as animals, monsters along with satires, genres of prostitutes and dancing girls were popular.


Some representative subjects are Wisteria Maiden and Praying Goblin.
   
How long did it take to produce one Otsu-e?
   

Travelers on the Tokaido didn't have much time to waste. But painters didn't sell already prepared paintings. Otsu-e was produced on demand.

It was painted right there, right after the order.

Even the Edo era, speed was also important.

“Draw us Wisteria Maiden!"
“I’ll have a Praying Goblin!”
“Righty ho!”

This dialog might have been heard in Kansai dialect there then.

There is footage of how to paint Otsu-e then at a Otsu City Museum of History.

A detailed painting was finished in 7 minutes. And regular paintings were produced in 3 to 5 minutes.

Speed was the basis for winning even in the Edo era.

What is the price?
   

The price was about as much as a bowl of buckwheat noodles then.

It was about 800 yen - 1000 yen in terms of todays sensibilities.

Otsu-e was highly appreciated as a convenient souvenir.

The size was about 25cm x 35cm and it was rolled up so that it wouldn't be too much to carry.

 

And there is a story that traveling pharmacists of Toyama gave Otsu-e their customers as souvenirs.

   
Was anybody able to be an Otsu-e painter?
   

No.

Surprisingly, Otsu-e was passed down by succession.

It was transmitted by passing down to descendants but many other painters painted Otsu-e based on the subjects because there were many fans of Otsu-e which was very popular in the Edo era.

 

Most surprisingly, the famous artist, Taro Okamoto,known for his famous work of Taiyo no tou or The tower of the sun, was a big fan of Otsu-e.

It would be wonderful if there were Otsu-e with unique features of Taro Okamoto.
