◆ History of Otsu-e

 
The advent of Otsu-e (during the Kanei period [about 1624-1644])
 

It is believed that the advent of Otsu-e was around the Kanei period. It started by portraying around Buddha at the beginning for ordinary people's prayer.
It is said that cheap prices were an absolute requirement.


 
The beginning of genre paintings (upper 17th - lower 18th century)
 

Genre paintings began to portray early. Ukiyo-e like beauties such as Wisteria Maiden, a girl reading and a woman with an umbrella were the starter, and subjectives had been established by adding arrengemant of Otsu-e painters.

The famous subject of Otsu-e, Praying Goblin, started around this time.

 
Caricatures and humorousness (the mid-18th - late 18th century)
 

Otsu-e and Douka, which teaches moral lessons, were combined around the 18th century.

The expression has been changed into humorous and lovely character.

 
Change for practical use (early 19th century)
 

Images didn't change but how they were painted changed in the interest of saving time for the practical use as an amulet.

Faicial expressions and limbs dipiction became fluid, and soft lovely works started.
